NodeMCU ESP32 modules are great for IoT projects. But they have only an onboard antenna only which is good for most common applications. The onboard PCB antenna is optimized for decent performance, compact size, and cost. Modules with an internal antenna provide no option to add an external antenna. If your application requires long-range communication, you will have to add an external antenna to the ESP32 Module. This ESP-WROOM-32U board lets you add an external antenna and extend the range of your ESP32. In a standard ESP32 module, you are limited to using the onboard antenna only. With this module, you can use differnet external antennas as per your application and get the desired range performance.

Online Users have reported line of sight range upto 1.5 km for this ESP32 with low cost 3dbi antennas!

ESP32-WROOM-32U is powerful, generic Wi-Fi+BT+BLE MCU modules that targets a wide variety of applications, ranging from low-power sensor networks to the most demanding tasks, such as voice encoding, music streaming and MP3 decoding.

ESP32-WROOM-32U is much smaller as it relies on an external WiFi/Bluetooth antenna via a u.FL connector. Both new modules are pin-to-pin compatible with ESP-WROOM-32

At the core of this module is the ESP32-D0WD chip that belongs to the ESP32 series* of chips. The chip embedded is designed to be scalable and adaptive. There are two CPU cores that can be individually controlled,and the CPU clock frequency is adjustable from 80 MHz to 240 MHz.
